First Phosphate’s main project, Lac à l’Orignal, is located approximately 110 kilometers north of the city of Saguenay, the sixth largest city in Quebec, which has a skilled industrial workforce, strong local infrastructure and is only 30 kilometers from the deep-water port of Saguenay. The Bégin-Lamarche property, in turn, is located approximately 75 kilometers from the Port of Saguenay. First Phosphate has already entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Saguenay port operator to secure deepwater access to world markets and valuable industrial port development.
Experienced mining expert joins First Phosphate
Exploration in Canada must always be considered in terms of cooperation with the so-called First Nations, the indigenous peoples of Canada, and a good relationship with First Nations is of great importance, as they often hold rights to the land where the sought-after resources are found.
In this regard, too, the appointment of Armand MacKenzie to First Phosphate’s advisory board is, in our view, a wise move. MacKenzie grew up in traditional Innu territory. He has practiced law for 15 years and was the Innu Nation’s senior legal advisor for land rights. He also served as special counsel/negotiator in the drafting and adoption of the UN General Assembly Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. MacKenzie has negotiated numerous mining impact agreements. He has also held senior positions in the mining sector over the past 15 years.
“Mr. MacKenzie is an experienced mining professional and knows the Québec area and the Indigenous heartland where we operate,” First Phosphate CEO John Passalacqua stated.
Mr. MacKenzie himself emphasized, “My experience in the mining industry and my extensive relationships with Indigenous communities provide a strong background to meet First Phosphate’s needs. I look forward to working with the entire First Phosphate team to realize this intergenerational opportunity for a clean mining and energy transition.”
