EcoGraf Limited (ASX: EGR; FSE: FMK; OTCQX: ECGFF) aims to minimize the carbon footprint of its future graphite production for battery anodes and therefore aims to use electricity with a high proportion of hydropower and other renewable energy sources for its Epanko graphite project in Tanzania. To this end, the company has now entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding with Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) for the development of transmission infrastructure to supply grid power to the Epanko graphite project.
Under the agreement, the parties will establish a joint technical committee to coordinate and manage the design and construction of a 33 kV transmission line from the nearby town of Mahenge to the Epanko graphite project. The line will be sized to accommodate future demand growth associated with the future expansion of the Epanko project.
The collaboration with TANESCO will enable Epanko to benefit from the supply of low-cost, clean energy, as hydropower accounts for approximately 45% of Tanzania’s energy supply, with this share forecast to increase in the future as part of wider government investment in hydropower, solar, wind and biomass renewable energy generation.
Independent life cycle assessment studies conducted for EcoGraf confirm that electricity is responsible for 45-55% of CO2 emissions associated with its battery anode products, and that Tanzania’s grid power supply represents a significant competitive advantage as electric vehicle manufacturers seek more sustainable supply chains.
Combined with EcoGraf HFfree™ purification, the carbon footprint of the company’s battery anode material is reduced by up to 65% compared to existing natural graphite supply chains and by up to 78% compared to synthetic graphite supplies.
