{australien_flagge}The Australian Federal Government adds HPA (High Purity Alumina) to the national list of critical minerals. No less than Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison commented on the strategic importance of this decision: “The world is becoming increasingly uncertain, and we want to secure Australia as a reliable partner for local and global companies that need the critical minerals we have here in Australia.”
The boost to the niche HPA product from its inclusion on the National Critical Minerals List confirms the joint course of FYI Resources Ltd (ASX: FYI; OTCQX: FYIRF; FSE: SDL) and its partner Alcoa Australia. Roland Hill, MD of FYI Resources, reiterated, “FYI and our partner Alcoa Australia have a goal to become a leading producer of premium quality HPA.” He added that FYI is proud of the role it will play in the future in supplying premium quality HPA to the growing battery sector, as well as in processing critical minerals.
FYI’s HPA project is closely aligned with increasing policy changes around the world that call for higher standards for feedstocks and better environmental and social (ESG) policies in battery mineral supply chains. HPA’s inclusion on the National Critical Minerals List underscores its importance to modern high-tech applications and a low-carbon future.
HPA has unique chemical and physical properties. HPA is a sought-after material for the production of phosphors, sapphire glass, and substrates for applications such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and also as the ceramic coating of the separator membrane in high-energy-density batteries such as those used in lithium-ion cells in electric vehicles.
While global demand for critical minerals is increasing, global supply is uncertain due to market, technical and commercial risks associated with critical minerals projects. The need for robust supply chains was underscored by the COVID-19 pandemic. Countries are increasingly seeking access to reliable, secure, and resilient supplies of the critical minerals they need.
Bottom line: the decision by the Australian Federal government’s to include HPA in the National Critical Minerals list and co-ordinate the list with other major governments globally provides credibility and a degree of visibility to a commodity that is not traded on an open market. Especially, as resilient supply chains are the order of the day for critical components and raw materials. Australia has a special role to play in avoiding unilateral dependencies on China, for example. In addition, FYI/Alcoa promise to produce HPA more cheaply, in higher quality and in a more environmentally friendly way than the previously available standard. Taken together, these are very many good reasons to take the next step towards production soon. That step now would be to decide on a demonstration plant. The market is waiting.
