Luxembourg, April 02, 2025 – Institutional investors are targeting precious and industrial metals, agricultural goods, or energy companies to strategically complement their portfolios. The complexity that commodity exposure can bring is optimally managed through compartments.
A commentary by Daniel Knoblach, Board Member of Super Global Services SA.
Commodities are currently gaining importance in the strategic portfolio allocation of institutional investors. The global economic and geopolitical situation provides several reasons for this. The persistent core inflation in the US is causing some to seek protection against price increases, others use a broad commodity basket for diversification, while others bet on structural developments such as the progress of decarbonization with targeted investments.
As diverse as the individual reasons are, so are the respective investment goals. Investors are currently demanding classic physical gold or silver, but are also looking for opportunities to invest in funds focused on rare earths or agricultural commodities, or to directly participate in mining companies. Additionally, they sometimes pursue special strategies. For instance, they bet on the decline of individual commodity prices or invest with an ESG approach in companies that produce green hydrogen. The multitude of vehicles and strategies makes the topic complex, especially when aiming to build a differentiated commodity exposure. Here, an allocation using a compartment can be a solution.
With compartments under Luxembourg law, commodities can be added to a portfolio alongside other asset classes without complication. The desired investment objective is packaged into a custody-capable instrument and receives an ISIN, making it easily tradable through the bank. An investor thus doesn’t need to worry about questions such as storage facilities for physical precious metals. The structure under Luxembourg securitization law also provides legal certainty and transparency in taxation. With a compartment, the investor gains full control with minimal complexity, as investment management is handled by experts and we are the specialists for administration.
