{kanada_flagge}German hydrogen start-up H2-SPHERE GmbH, a subsidiary of Canadian mining company Cerro de Pasco Resources (TSXV: CDPR; FRA: N8HP) is preparing a patent with the German Aerospace Center on an environmentally friendly process for green hydrogen production based on mining waste in Cerro de Pasco Resources’ Quiulacocha tailings pond in Peru. More than 180 million tons of acid-emitting mining waste dating back more than 100 years is stored there and in the adjacent Excelsior stockpile, half of which can probably be used to produce hydrogen using the new process.

More than 180 million tons of acid-emitting mining waste dating back more than 100 years is stored there and in the adjacent Excelsior stockpile, half of which can probably be used to produce hydrogen using the new process.
The decision to file a patent is based on the positive results of the investigative report (Phase 1a), prepared jointly with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and published on October 27, 2022, confirming the process, conversion rates and unit costs based on scientific theory and empirical evidence. The next phase (1b) will include laboratory testing and development of core components for industrial production.
Bernhard Dold, CEO of H2-SPHERE and CTO of CDPR said, “The study report shows that the proposed techniques are very competitive in terms of production costs and energy efficiency compared to standard green hydrogen production processes, opening up a potential for an alternative green hydrogen production technique in the near future. H2-SPHERE and DLR’s core innovations include two complementary techniques for the permanent removal of highly polluting elements in CDPR’s mineral wastes, which are the main cause of acid mine drainage (AMD), and their conversion into green hydrogen and other commercial by-products.”
Guy Goulet, CEO of CDPR: “The initial conclusions of this study allow us to significantly expand our vision for the Quiulacocha Tailings Project in terms of scale, end product and economics. We can now not only aspire, but actively plan to become a net negative CO2 mineral producer.”
DLR – global technology leader
DLR is Germany’s aerospace research center with 10,000 employees and 55 research institutes and facilities exploring Earth and space to develop solutions for a sustainable future.
H2-SPHERE research is conducted by the Institute for Fuels of the Future, recently established by DLR to prioritize the development of chemical energy storage (fuels, i.e. green hydrogen). The ongoing research priorities are highly compatible with CDPR’s mineral waste resources. Based on the positive results of Phase 1a, further collaboration between H2-SPHERE and DLR is planned.
Industrially scalable resource
Up to half of the material from the Quiulacocha Tailings and Excelsior stockpile, which together represent approximately 180 million tons, can potentially be reprocessed using the techniques now being developed under the agreement between DLR and H2-SPHERE. Beyond these surface resources, the Cerro de Pasco mining cluster offers several other opportunities. These resources alone offer the opportunity to build a world-leading and sustainable clean energy company.
About Cerro de Pasco Resources

The Company’s key strategic strength is its unique knowledge of the challenges and opportunities presented by the mineral resources in and around the town of Cerro de Pasco, combined with a highly experienced and hands-on team of Peruvian and international executives. The Company’s growth focus is on the development of the El Metalurgista mining concession using best-in-class geo-resource development and industrial development solutions to ensure long-term economic sustainability in harmony with a healthy and prosperous local population. The Company, which currently operates the Santander Mine, is also interested in acquiring and operating mines suitable for the Company’s strategic growth plan.
About H2-SPHERE
H2-SPHERE was founded in December 2021 in partnership with Prof. Dr. Bernhard Dold in Germany to develop techniques aimed at converting mineral waste into green hydrogen and other by-products, with the common goal of eliminating the source of acid mine drainage (AMD) and significantly improving the scale and future profitability of the El Metalurgista concession.
