Innovative solutions for national security requirements in space

AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ: ASTS, WKN: A3CL8W) is the first and so far only company to establish a space-based cellular broadband network that can be accessed directly via any standard smartphone. The new technology is intended to be usable for both commercial and government applications.

This technological openness is attractive. AST SpaceMobile has therefore been selected by the Space Development Agency (SDA) as one of the main contractors of the United States government. Specifically, AST SpaceMobile has been selected for an Other Transaction Arrangement.

This gives AST SpaceMobile the opportunity to apply for upcoming prototype demonstration projects under the Hybrid Acquisition for Proliferated Low-earth Orbit programme. This so-called HALO programme is a strategic initiative designed to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced space technologies.

With this programme, the SDA aims to promote competition on the one hand and drive innovation on the other. This is being done primarily with the Department of Defense in mind, with the aim of quickly providing it with the most advanced technologies and capabilities.

AST SpaceMobile could soon become the prime contractor for certain prototype orders

It is no coincidence that AST SpaceMobile was selected by the SDA. On the one hand, the decision reflects the company’s strong track record in the development of space-based technologies. Since AST SpaceMobile clearly aligns its research and products with the SDA’s mission, its selection by the SDA was also an obvious choice.

Now, AST SpaceMobile has the opportunity to apply directly for specific prototype orders as a prime contractor. Once the first order is placed, AST SpaceMobile will have the opportunity to demonstrate the applicability and scalability of its technology for various government applications.

AST SpaceMobile’s technology is unique in this respect, as it is based on over 3,450 granted and pending patents and enables satellites to serve both communications and non-communications applications. It thus represents the largest commercial phased arrays ever deployed in low Earth orbit.

This technology offers its users unique capabilities in terms of both coverage and security and reliability. It is therefore a true dual-use technology that enables the US government to address a wide range of use cases.

‘This first contract confirms our commitment to developing innovative solutions for national security requirements in space,’ said Chris Ivory, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of the Government Business Unit at AST SpaceMobile. ’Our space-based cellular broadband technology has the potential to enhance SDA’s stated mission at the transport, tracking and ground levels in a secure and reliable manner.’
