Global access to anyone with a smartphone

On January 1, 1985, Michael Harrison made history by calling his father, Vodafone’s founder Ernest Harrison, from Parliament Square, marking the UK’s first mobile phone call. Forty years later, Vodafone made history again when CEO Margherita della Valle placed the first space-based mobile video call to engineer Rowan Chesmer in late January, enabled by AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ: ASTS, WKN: A3CL8W).

This call was unique because Chesmer was in a remote area of Wales, where traditional mobile coverage is unavailable due to high infrastructure costs. Yet, the call connected via AST SpaceMobile’s Bluebird satellites, proving that standard cell phones can now operate in isolated regions without expensive technology.

This innovation is crucial, as few customers would invest heavily for connectivity in remote areas. AST SpaceMobile eliminates that need, allowing both 4G and 5G calls with a standard phone. Vodafone has demonstrated a technology capable of delivering mobile broadband globally. Coverage depends on satellite deployment, currently focused on the U.S., but expanding to Europe, Asia, and beyond.

Each AST SpaceMobile rocket launch enhances Vodafone’s services. The Bluebird 1-5 satellites are already active, helping Vodafone test its first commercial broadband satellite service, set to launch in 2025 or early 2026.

AST SpaceMobile’s founder, Abel Avellan, takes pride in enabling worldwide, even extraterrestrial, mobile connectivity. Unlike competitors, AST SpaceMobile’s technology offers global access to anyone with a smartphone, making it a key partner for Vodafone and other telecom providers.
