The right person in the right place

Quimbaya Gold (WKN A3DT3C / CSE QIM), with its high-grade exploration projects in the Antioquia region, the most important mining district in Colombia, is one of the most exciting new gold stories to come out of South America, recently, in our opinion. The Canadian company is using the latest exploration methods under an experienced and successful management team with many years of expertise in the South American country.

And now the company has also secured the knowledge of a renowned geologist who not only has many years of experience in (gold) exploration in Latin America and Colombia, but also in Antioquia in particular, where three of Quimbaya’s projects are located. This expert, Ricardo Sierra, who has so far supported Quimbaya as a technical advisor, will take over the management of exploration at the young gold company with immediate effect!

Extensive experience in exactly the right region

Mr. Sierra lives in the Colombian city of Manizales, close to Medellin, and therefore to the company’s main projects. He is a professional economic geologist with more than 18 years of exploration experience in Colombia, Chile, Cuba and Brazil in orogenic, mesothermal and porphyry deposits as well as epithermal systems, skarn and strata bound deposits. Juan Ricardo Sierra began his career with commodities giant Anglo American as an exploration geologist in greenfield and brownfield exploration, overseeing diamond drilling on the company’s Colombian and Chilean properties.

He deepened his knowledge of vein systems, which is crucial for understanding mineralization processes, as exploration manager at Continental Gold (which Zijin Mining Group acquired for CAD 1.9 billion (!) in 2020) at its Buritica gold and silver deposit – in Antioquia. During his time at Continental Gold, Mr. Sierra was also involved in regional exploration (Choco, Nariño, Cauca, Antioquia). After leaving Continental Gold in 2020, he worked as Exploration Manager at Collective Mining Inc (TSX: CNL). Since 2021, Mr. Sierra has advised various companies operating in Colombia, Brazil and Cuba, including Quimbaya Gold, where he is now taking a more active role.

Mr. Sierra graduated in Geology from the Universidad de Caldas (Colombia) in 2007 and is a member of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (MAusIMM). He is also a Qualified Person (QP) under the Canadian National Instrument 43-101 standard and a Competent Person (CP) of the Comision Colombiana de Recursos y Reservas Mineras (CCRR) (Colombian Commission of Mining Resources and Reserves).

On the hunt for the next big gold discovery in Colombia

Alexandre P. Boivin President and CEO of Quimbaya Gold also emphasizes the importance that Mr. Sierra will have for his company going forward: “With his direct exploration experience in Antioquia, Colombia, he is the right person to help us make the next major gold discovery in one of the best gold-rich areas in the world.”

We consider it an important step that Quimbaya Gold has secured the services of Mr. Sierra as VP Exploration. The junior company has completed extensive preliminary exploration on its flagship Tahami South project over the past year and we expect QIM to aggressively advance the property, which is in close proximity to Aris Mining’s (TSX ARIS / WKN A3DTTG) profitably producing mining operation, under Mr. Sierra’s leadership. We will present this exciting story in more detail to Goldinvest.de readers in the near future!
