A brief but significant announcement from the Australian graphite company EcoGraf (WKN A2PW0M / ASX EGR) early this morning: The company has received a second patent for its environmentally friendly graphite purification technology in Australia!
As reported by Managing Director Andrew Spinks early this morning German time, the company has received a second Australian patent for its HFfree® graphite purification method from the responsible authority – IP Australia. Unlike common methods, especially those used in the world’s largest market in China, this process does not use highly toxic hydrofluoric acid.
Patent Protection Until 2042
As EcoGraf now explains, the second patent provides comprehensive protection for the HFfree® purification process and builds on the company’s product qualification program, which is co-funded by a grant from the Australian government’s Critical Minerals Development Program. The company received the registration certificate on May 6, 2025. The patent, bearing the number 2022387279, has a term of 20 years from the date of patenting (November 11, 2022), thus expiring on November 11, 2042.
This second patent for Australia additionally covers the use of EcoGraf’s HFfree® purification method in a wide range of applications for the production of battery anode material and high-purity graphite products. It also extends to the recycling of lithium battery anodes – an area that, in our opinion, will become increasingly important globally in the future!

EcoGraf is building a vertically integrated business model for the production of battery anode material, based on cost-effective and environmentally friendly process technologies for the planned production of high-purity natural flake and spherical graphite in Tanzania, as well as downstream construction of EcoGraf HFfree® purification facilities in key global battery markets. Of course, the protection of intellectual property is of utmost importance for this! EcoGraf has therefore already applied for and received a patent for its HFfree® technology in the USA.
