The Storm Copper Project on Somerset Island in Nunavut is currently the only near-term viable copper project in Northern Canada, thus holding significant strategic and geopolitical importance. The Canadian government specifically promotes the expansion of domestic critical minerals production through various programs and financing instruments. American West Metals (ASX: AW1; Frankfurt: R84 FRA) is positioning itself with this project as a key player in the supply chain for copper.
American West Advances Pre-Feasibility Study
As part of the ongoing Pre-Feasibility Study for 2025, extensive fieldwork was completed in recent months. This includes marine and faunal ecological studies in Aston Bay, investigations into fish habitats and freshwater lakes in the immediate vicinity of the planned pit, large-scale terrestrial fauna and flora surveys, and geotechnical drilling for stability testing of the proposed open-pit structures. Additionally, archaeological investigations took place. These works provide the necessary baseline data for the Environmental Assessment, which is a mandatory prerequisite for a future mining permit.
Permitting Process Initiated
Parallel to the technical work, American West has submitted essential permit applications to the Nunavut Planning Commission. This includes, on the one hand, the extension of the exploration and water license, which is intended to enable an expansion of exploration activities and surface transport. On the other hand, an application for approval of mine development and preparatory preliminary work was submitted. This provides the company with the foundation to further expand exploration and to advance concrete development towards mine construction.
Geological Upside Identified for the Cyclone Deposit
Geologically, encouraging results were also achieved. In the area of the Cyclone deposit, seven geotechnical drill holes were completed, intersecting significant sections of visible copper sulfide mineralization. Potential for resource extensions is particularly indicated at the southern and northern edges of the planned pit. Should this be confirmed by the pending laboratory analyses, the ore quantity currently considered in the Preliminary Economic Assessment could significantly increase, which would further strengthen the project’s economics.

Management Confident
Dave O’Neill, Managing Director of American West, stated: “We are very encouraged by the results of the work. All required activities have been successfully completed and now provide the baseline data to significantly advance the Pre-Feasibility Study. Particularly pleasing are the significant copper intersections in the geotechnical drill holes, which have the potential to push the pit walls outwards – and thus extract more copper from the ground.”
Outlook
Further drilling results are expected in the coming weeks, which could provide additional clarity on the resource potential. Together with the progress in permitting and the PFS, the Storm Copper Project is well-positioned to become one of the most significant copper suppliers in Northern Canada in the coming years.
